HARTE

Ed Harte's passing is a great loss to us all. Ed was a quiet, unassuming man, even shy but he had an iron will and the heart of a giant. It is a moment of sadness but also an opportunity to reflect back on a life well lived, and celebrate what he did for us all. Texas and the world would be a different and lesser place were it not for his philanthropy and leadership in conserving the best and most valuable of Texas. Big Bend, Padre Island National Seashore, and other significant places would not be what they are today if Ed and his family had not stepped up when it counted. The Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies would not exist but for his commitment and fore-thought. He inspired us all to make a difference, as he most certainly did. He bequeathed us not only unparalleled natural treasures and the opportunity to conserve them for the future, but four children – Julia, Elizabeth, Chris and Will, who have all followed his lead and will continue to build on the legacy of Ed Harte.
