  GULFBASE WEBSITE
A Resource Database for Gulf of Mexico Research

GulfBase website, a resource database for Gulf of Mexico Research

The website GulfBase.org is one of many projects supported by the HRI. One of the HRI's goals is to promote and support research focused on sustainable use and conservation of the Gulf of Mexico. That task requires knowledge of current available resources, including the knowledge of our neighbors and colleagues in the USA, Mexico and Cuba.

It is our hope that by building a centralized database of researchers, research institutes, research projects, and general facts related to the Gulf of Mexico, we will strengthen national and international relationships among scientists of all countries who share an interest in the sustainability of the Gulf of Mexico. We believe that active participation in the building of this important online database is paramount to its success in addressing the many issues currently challenging the Gulf of Mexico. This will ultimately lead to solutions for increasing the Gulf's sustainability and conservation for future generations.

GulfBase Facts:
  • GulfBase is a web-based database of research institutions, researchers, research projects and other information about the Gulf of Mexico.
  • As of August 2008 GulfBase contained information from:
    • 464 institutions and organizations
    • 1,657 researchers
    • 140 reefs/islands
    • 95 bays
    • 471 projects
    • 267 events
  • Between 2007 and 2002, the year GulfBase first went online, the website received 170,119 hits. Total page views were 847,311.
  • GulfBase is fully searchable and free to the public.
  • An important feature of GulfBase is that researchers can update their own information directly through the web. GulfBase is therefore maintained and kept up-to-date by those who know the Gulf best.
  • GulfBase is a great tool for increasing communication among researchers around the Gulf. Each research laboratory is listed in GulfBase, along with contact information and specialization.
  • Information is very accessible:
    • Any webpage can be reached with only 3 mouse clicks.
    • The database search engine is powerful but very easy to use.
    • Search results can be sorted various ways or further refined depending on the user's needs.
  • GulfBase is rich in cross-linking.
  • GulfBase was designed so that anyone can participate and propose new information for addition to the database.
  • GulfBase is an international endeavor, containing research information from the three Gulf of Mexico countries: US, Mexico, and Cuba.
  • The GulfBase development team is also international, including members in the US and Mexico.
  • GulfBase is a growing website. We are now developing an online Geographic Information System (GIS) to access GulfBase's resources.
  • GulfBase won the 2006 Gulf Guardian Award in the Bi-National category from the US Environmental Protection Agency's Gulf of Mexico Program.

GulfBase InfoHub

InfoHub, a new addition to the Gulfbase website, facilitates the rapid deployment of research-based information to a broad range of stakeholders. InfoHub will communicate the state of thinking on the Gulf of Mexico from experts in the field including law and policy makers, business and industry professionals, resource managers, agency personnel, attorneys and community groups. Users can search InfoHub by area of interest and read summaries of relevant literature. InfoHub's content covers many topics, including: economics, law and policy, science, social science, ecosystem-based management and collaborative governance. The result is a web-based window into a wealth of research at no cost to users. Search InfoHub and put collective knowledge to work on your stewardship and business objectives.

GULFBASE.ORG

"The development of the GulfBase website meets a fundamental goal of the research facility: to build a central database where information from the U.S., Mexico, and Cuba can be shared and international relationships strengthened. As scientists actively contribute to and use GulfBase, the site will lead to solutions for increasing the Gulf's sustainability and conservation for future generations."
