The Laguna Outreach Project is the result of the partnership between HRI and The Innovation Academy for Engineering, Environmental, and Marine Science, a 6-12th grade STEM driven Academy in Corpus Christi. HRI's Education Specialist transports Innovation Academy students to TAMUCC's Laguna Madre Field Station where students transform into Research Scientists. Their mission while there is to learn sampling techniques ranging from benthic sled pulls to plant transects. After techniques are aquired students must sample and record environmental data that can be incorporated into their interdisciplinary curriculum.
Our goal is to give students independence experienced by researchers in the field when collecting data. This experience demonstrates to students that science can and is carried out anywhere, and removes the stigma of the constraints set by a laboratory.
