The mission of the GRI and GRIIDC is to ensure a data and information legacy that promotes continual scientific discovery and public awareness of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem. THE ART OF THE DIVE:
PORTRAITS OF THE DEEP

Art Museum of South Texas
The Art of the Dive is an upcoming exhibition that will be featured at the Art Museum of South Texas starting January 20, 2012. The exhibition features over 70 paintings, sculptures and photographs by marine artists who portray underwater life forms and habitat. Subjects range from sailfish, marlin, and other billed game fish to striped bass, bluefish, tarpon, snook, tuna and many more. Included in the exhibition are Stanley Meltzoff, who is generally recognized as the father of the genre, sculptor Kent Ullberg, painter Al Barnes and internationally recognized fish expert Guy Harvey.
On Friday, January 20, a "Lunch Amongst the Masters" will honor the artists in the exhibition. Artists Kent Ullberg and Guy Harvey will present their own experiences in the dives that influenced their paintings and sculptures.
On Sunday, February 19 at 3:00pm, the museum will host a slide talk by our executive director, Dr. Larry McKinney. The Sunday Slide Talk highlights our local waters but will showcase the unique diversity of the Gulf of Mexico and bring to light the issues facing this body of water today. His talk is titled "The Gulf of Mexico - Will Wonders Never Cease? and is free with paid museum admission or membership.

HRI WEEKLY SEMINAR SERIES

The next seminar speaker on February 3, 2012 will be Dr. Paul Montagna, endowed chair of ecosystems and modeling at the Harte Research Institute. His seminar titled "Assessment of the Deep-Sea Sediment Quality Following the Deepwater Horizon Accident" will be held at 3:30pm in HRI room 127.
SPECIAL RADIO SERIES
Gulf Matters: The Laguna Madre

This 10-part radio series "The Laguna Madre will air on KEDT-FM 90.3 at 8:04AM and 4:44PM weekdays beginning on Monday, August 29th. The 10 episodes sponsored by the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies are 5-6 minutes long and will also air on KVRT-FM 90.7 in Victoria. "The Laguna Madre" explores the many attributes of this unique body of water on the South Texas coast through conversations with scientists, fisherman, birders, and boaters. Replays of the series will run three times a week through Friday, November 18th. The production is part of the HRI's ongoing outreach initiative "Gulf Matters," a series about the Gulf of Mexico.
