Recently, the Texas General Land Office (GLO) required that FORTIFIED Home™ construction standards be used for housing recovery projects through their Hurricane Harvey Disaster Recovery Housing Guidelines. Projects funded through the GLO will use nearly $4.1 Billion in Federal Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery funding to rebuild and repair housing damaged by Hurricane Harvey.

Current plans call for nearly 2,500 homes to be built to FORTIFIED standards in Aransas County alone. FORTIFIED is a way to build a new home or retrofit an existing home beyond typical building codes to deliver superior performance during severe weather (such as hurricanes, strong thunderstorms, and lower-level tornadoes).

FORTIFIED is a resilient building method based on more than 20 years of scientific research and real-world testing by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). IBHS is an independent, nonprofit scientific research and communications organization supported solely by property insurers and reinsurers.

Join AIA/AGC/APA for this joint lunch & Learn presentation, which will provide an introduction to the construction standard.

This one-hour course is designed to prepare and inform attendees prior to an influx of FORTIFIED and resilient homes into the Texas market. They will learn how “beyond code” construction increases the resilience of homes and communities and will be introduced to the techniques and inspection process of the nationally recognized FORTIFIED Home construction standard.

The presentation will begin with a 1/2 hour networking opportunity so our attendees may eat and get to know one another before the session.

Smart Home America and the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety will present about the FORTIFIED Home program, its benefits, how it better protects properties and possessions, and answer questions from attendees.
