Gulf of Mexico Workshop on International Research

The Gulf of Mexico Workshop on International Research was held on March 29 to 30, 2017, in Houston Texas coinciding with the State of the Gulf of Mexico Summit, which occurred March 26 to 28. Several of the activities scheduled for the Summit had direct impacts on the workshop and helped set the stage for a successful activity.

The workshop addressed existing research programs and identified knowledge gaps for future research opportunities in the Gulf of Mexico, by bringing together scientists from the U.S. and Mexico from across a range of disciplines. There were three thematic areas – baseline studies; fates and effects studies; and, environmental monitoring. Participation was held by invitation only with 20-60 in each thematic area for a total of 154 workshop participants.

Participants included state or federal agency scientists, Mexican scientists, and others with one or more of the following attributes:

  • International research experience in Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico
  • Experience or expertise in nearshore systems - Gulf of Mexico
  • Experience or expertise in deep-water systems - Gulf of Mexico
  • Experience or expertise in socio-economic aspects related to the Gulf of Mexico
  • Particular knowledge or experience in one or more of the thematic areas related to the Gulf of Mexico

Topics of interest that were addressed at the workshop broadly included marine mammals and protected species, habitat and ecology, physical oceanography, water and air quality, and social science and economics, with consideration given to appropriate observational, laboratory, and modeling methodologies. Identification of interdisciplinary approaches to studies which integrate perspectives across disciplines that encourage or help facilitate ecosystem-based understanding and management approaches were a priority. 2018 Proceedings may be found below:
