"Addressing Fishery Management Needs through Sound Science: Research Highlights and Upcoming Projects at the Sportfish Center"

DR. MATTHEW STREICH
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, CENTER FOR SPORTFISH SCIENCE AND CONSERVATION
HARTE RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR GULF OF MEXICO STUDIES

Sportfish populations in the estuaries and offshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico support a multibillion-dollar recreational fishing industry. Management of these fisheries is complex and must adapt to numerous challenges including but not limited to significant human population growth in coastal regions, habitat degradation, and climate-driven habitat change. Additionally, key information or parameters needed to accurately assess the status of certain fisheries remain poorly studied or unknown.

As the first ever research center dedicated to recreational fisheries science, the Center for Sportfish Science and Conservation (Sportfish Center) at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies has become a nationally recognized leader in providing the science-based information needed to support the sustainable management of the valuable recreational fisheries that occur along the Gulf Coast. This presentation will feature some of the Sportfish Center’s key research contributions since being established in 2013 as well as highlight some ongoing and upcoming projects to address current fishery management needs.

Dr. Matt Streich is the Assistant Director of the Center for Sportfish Science and Conservation at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. His research focuses on supporting sustainable recreational fisheries along the Texas Coast and throughout the Gulf of Mexico through sound science and angler engagement.
